Date:2016-12-28

The first performance evaluation of HIST towards maintenance of its status as a UNESCO Category II center was undertaken in Beijing. The evaluation was conducted by Professor Stuart Marsh, a UNESCO appointed reviewer from the University of Nottingham, over a three day period from 20th to 22nd December 2016.
On 20th December, Professor Marsh had a tour of HIST and its host institution – AIR, and visited the facilities, including the Miyun ground station.
The second day was focused on the report meeting on HISTs performance from 2011 to 2016, which began with HIST Director, Professor. Guo Huadong welcoming Prof. Marsh and briefly reviewing the past 6 years of HIST and expressing hope for the future. Prof. Hong Tianhua, Executive Deputy Director and Secretary-General of HIST, then presented a report on the performance of HIST from 2011-2016, in which he touched upon the background of the formation of HIST and the various domestic and international projects undertaken. The Huangshan Dialogue was highlighted by Prof. Marsh in the discussions that followed. Details on the specific projects were provided by Prof. Wang Cheng on “Remote Sensing for the Environment of Angkor Site (REAS)”; Prof. Chen Fulong on “Smart Management of Cultural Heritage in China and Italy: Pilot Projects”; Prof. Wang Xinyuan on “Fine Observation of the Impact of Global Change on World Heritage Sites”; Ms. YuLijin on behalf of Professor Nie Yueping on “Remote Sensing for Exploring the Origin of Chinese Civilisation” and by Prof. Chen Fang on “Introduction to Disaster Risk Reduction Research in AIR” and “Introduction to the Digital Belt and Road Initiative”. This meeting was followed by another session with the stakeholders and partner organizations, each of whom spoke about their partnership with HIST and their plans going forward.

The final day saw the attendees gather for the review and feedback meeting. Prof. Marsh presented his report on his observations, according to which most performance indicators seemed to have been met and in some cases exceeded. He made some suggestions and recommendations and expressed hope that HIST would be renewed for the next 6 year term. He was particularly impressed by the Huangshan Dialogue and the future path to be taken through the Digital Belt and Road Initiative (DBAR).
