Li Rusheng, Deputy Director-General of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and other delegates visited the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) on April 28th at the invitation of the International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and Cultural Heritage (HIST) hosted by AIR, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Li and his party first viewed the Digital Earth 3D Simulation Demonstration, the operation management system for work stations and networks and the video surveillance of the real-time operation of the aerial system at Miyun Station. They then had a meeting with Guo Huadong, Director-General of AIR, and his colleagues.

Guo extended a warm welcome to Li and his party, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the support from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and introduced HIST’s role in monitoring and preserving natural heritage. Afterwards, Wang Xinyuan, Deputy Director of HIST, introduced the development program, operation mechanism and research projects of HIST as well as suggestions on the orientation of cooperation with the Ministry.

There are 911 heritage sites listed in the World Heritage List, which are divided into three catefories of natural, cultural and mixed properties. China has 40 world heritage sites, of which the State Administration of Cultural Heritage is in charge of the cultural heritage, and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development is in charge of the natural heritage and the mixed heritage. Li said the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development is the competent authority on natural heritage in China and needed to further increase software and hardware power in respect to monitoring, preserving and managing natural heritage sites. He added that they should make the best use of the scientific and technological advantages of the HIST and AIR to develop mutual cooperation in respect to research projects, professional training and public promotion so as to provide a scientific basis for decision-making. He also hoped that HIST will fullfill its international obligations and responsibilities under the framework of UNESCO to demonstrate the image of China as a responsible country.
