The 2nd International Workshop of Space Technologies in Management and Conservation of World Heritage
The 2nd International Workshop of Space Technologies in Management and Conservation of World Heritage Sites was opened in AIR on 2nd July. The workshop was jointly organized by AIR and the International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and Cultural Heritage (HIST) under the Auspices of UNESCO, aiming to help the participants understand principles and methods of applying space technologies to the conservation and management of world heritage, the significance of conservation of world heritage, and the important role of space technologies.
AIR Director-general and HIST Director Prof. GUO Huadong delivered a speech and briefly introduced the application of space technologies to the conservation and management of world heritage and the courses provided on the workshop. Also present at the opening ceremony were CAO Jinghua, Deputy Director General of CAS Bureau of International Cooperation, and LU Qiong, a senior official of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage. CAO spoke highly of the workshop and said that CAS would give more support to HIST in the future. He also suggested that HIST keep contact with participants after the workshop so as to learn about the effect of the workshop on their work. LU Qiong introduced the achievements China has obtained in the conservation of world heritage, and hoped to promote cooperation between China and other Asian countries. Dr. Natarajan Ishwaran, State-Recruited Expert of China, and Anmed Ibrahim, as the representatives of lecturers and participants, respectively delivered a speech.
A total of 20 participants who are engaged in management and research of world heritage from 12 Asian and African developing countries such as Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Myanmar, Egypt and Ethiopia will attend the three-week workshop in Beijing and Zhengzhou, capital of Henan province. According to the schedule, the basics of space technologies and world heritage will be instructed in the first week; GIS software operation and analysis of cases of remote sensing techniques in archaeology in the second week; lectures at the Zhengzhou Base of HIST and a tour on the world heritage of Longmen Grottoes and study tour of Historic Monuments of Dengfeng in “The Centre of Heaven and Earth” in the third week.
